to work on the Vegas house - part 2

8-27-13 to 8-29-13

Someday we are going to see what's down this road.  I imagine something creepy.

Stateline...

This is where I spent almost everyday of my life for 10 years...the giant flask in the sky:)

I saw this view almost every day from the stoplight by my house...

First, the AC repair man came by, and within an hour had the cold air blowing:)

Next, this old yucky stove

thought that it was 12:09 for many years

and needed to be replaced with this one I found on Craigslist.

Then, replace this 15 year old refrigerator

with this one that had been sitting in the garage for at least 2 years.  It was filthy inside and took me about three hours to get it clean, but it was well worth it for free...

After a trip to Home Depot, I could get started on the painting.

take down my old Pyrex shelf...

and plant some succulents in the flower box...

I went to the Habitat for Humanity Restore to look for some blinds and other building materials, but I didn't find anything, so I decided to go to Savers down the street.  I didn't see anything for the house, but few things I liked for me:) They were way over priced, so I left the thrift empty handed.
I loved this sheet, but not for $10.  Crazy Savers pricing:(

don't need any more canisters...

and I already have all of these...

Back to the house to pack up and water the plants.  The grapevine likes it when we come visit:)

then drive back to LA...

Garden - week 25

The garden needs some serious work.

The carrots are starting to grow, but you can barely see them because they are covered in brown things...

The tomato plants need to be ripped out and new ones planted...

The gourds are finally growing nicely.

and the basil is doing good...

the carrots in this bed are doing better...if you can see them through the brown things

Saturday Santa Clarita finds

I have driven by the antique mall many times, but never gone in.  Today I had time to kill so I decided to stop.  I am glad I did.
This orange Pyrex 402 bowl is not in the greatest shape.  There are scratches to the color and it looks like it has been through the dishwasher, but I couldn't leave it behind since I don't have this one, and the price was actually less than it would be at the thrift store.

But the best find ever...since the last best find ever are two records.
I have been on the lookout for Steely Dan albums for quite some time now.  I have only run across one...until now.  They were pretty pricey.  Three to 5 times what I would normally pay, but the chances of finding them again are slim, so I splurged.  Plus, I only paid a quarter for the first Steeley Dan album that I found, so I guess it all evens out.
Aja...

and The Royal Scam...

and since I still had time to kill, I stopped at Goodwill and found a super cute pot.  We already put a plant in it and put it by the sink:)

On the way home...

brown things

OMG!  I hate brown things!

We thought after cutting down two Ash trees last year that we would not have so many brown things (seed pods) fall into our yard, as we only had one Ash tree left.
They fall everywhere.  The grow anywhere.  They will even grow in rocks or a pile of themselves.  They cover the garden.  They are super hard to rake up, and even if you rake them all up one day, the ground will be covered with them the next day.  When the wind blows, it looks like it is raining brown things.

We can't have a pond or fountain because it would be full of brown things.
The brown things were out of control...
We really liked the shade the tree gave us, but the bad out weighed the good.
This tree...

does this to our yard.

Piles of brown things...

Plus it makes me nervous when it is windy.  Last year a branch fell onto the garage, blocking the garage door.  Thankfully MDH was home to move it so I could get my car out.
It had to be cut.
The arborists strongly suggest that you not top a tree, but I don't care.  If they were to prune and thin it then we would have the same problem next year.

We wanted it cut to a manageable size, so that we would be able to trim it ourselves.
About 50' tall...

down to a manageable height.  This way when these limbs bush out, we MDH can use the ladder to get up there and keep it under control.

This branch was cut a few years ago.  It won't be long until they all look like this.

Much  better:)

We did not keep the wood this time for the fire pit or the fence.  It was killing me not to go drag some out of the pile.
Plus, the June bugs were out in full force today, keeping me close to the back door.  The guys got quite a kick out of it.  They say there are worse things to look out for.  Um...I'm not sure about that.

Belle was inside howling.  It was to dangerous for her to come out so we locked her inside.  She thought it was the end of the world.

The only casualty was that the largest gourd we have ever grown fell and broke:(  It was hanging in a neighboring Mulberry tree.

Good riddance to the brown things.
